Class 1-A of U.A. High is brimming with all sorts of unique quirks and powers, yet it’s safe to say that not all quirks are equal. Shoto Todoroki’s power is a prime example as his quirk is entirely in a league of its own. As the child of Endeavor, the No. 2 Pro Hero, Shoto received a place in 1-A through official recommendations, though it's apparent he can fare quite well on his own.
With his novel quirk ‘Half-Cold Half-Hot,’ Shoto has mastery over two elements – fire and ice. Using this unique combination of elements, Shoto can easily overpower his opponents, even rivaling the likes of a few Pro Heroes. While his quirk may seem quite simple and straightforward, Half-Cold Half-Hot is laden with many intricacies that make its usage rather complex and exhausting.

Shoto Todoroki’s Quirk: Half-Cold Half-Hot
As the name suggests, Shoto’s quirk Half-Cold Half-Hot grants him the power to materialize and manipulate the element of ice from the right side of his body and the element of fire from the left side. The two elements are equally split throughout Shoto’s body, and he can conjure each one separately. However, he can only mold these two elements if they have been produced from his own body, meaning external flames or frost remain unaffected by this power.
This odd combination of these two powers stems from his parent’s Quirk Marriage, a concept that involves marrying for the sake of giving birth to offspring with enhanced quirks. Therefore, Half-Cold Half-Hot is the result of Endeavor’s Hellflame and Shoto’s mother’s Frost quirks. Due to the detest he bore for his father, Shoto refrained from using his flame powers, resulting in frost becoming his primary and stronger power.
After overcoming his abhorrence and past doubts, Shoto was able to train both sides equally, resulting in a new power that combines Frost and Hellflame. The end product is a ‘cold flame’ capable of freezing and burning opponents simultaneously. Gaining this power essentially allows Shoto to turn his “two” quirks into one single, stronger power.
Temperature Regulation
Half-Cold Half-Hot may seem like a simple frost-flame quirk at first, but its usage has several complexities. The primary intricacy is the temperature regulation aspect of this quirk, as utilizing too much of each side can either result in Shoto’s body overheating from the flames or succumbing to extreme cold and frostbites. To regulate body temperature, Shoto is forced to use both powers alternatively to counteract each one’s effect.
After using his frost side, Shoto has to utilize his flame powers to negate the freezing temperatures and vice versa. While this is crucial for Shoto’s body, regulating temperature can put a limit on how much each side can be used before adverse side effects begin to take over. However, Shoto has been able to overcome this limitation by sitting in a barrel of water and alternating between flames and frost to regulate the water’s temperature. This training further enhanced his sensitivity to both elements and increased the threshold for both powers.
Limitations of Half-Cold Half-Hot
Similar to any other quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot comes with its fair share of limitations and side effects. Shoto’s quirk has one major drawback, one that can be fatal if ignored. Failing to maintain optimal temperatures for his body can result in either a heat stroke or frostbite depending on too much heat or cold respectively. Even with Shoto’s regulation training and increased endurance for both elements, temperature regulation still remains a fatal limitation for the quirk.

Another one of Half-Cold Half-Hot’s drawbacks is favoring one side over the other. Ignoring either side will result in one side becoming dominant, which can be detrimental in battle. Shoto lost several fights in the beginning of My Hero Academia due to his reliance on his frost side and neglect for his flame powers. Shoto eventually overcomes this limitation and forms Cold Fire, an advanced form of the quirk. However, this ability rapidly drains his stamina, deeming it detrimental for long-hauled battles.
Shoto’s Signature Abilities
Since Shoto is one of the main characters in the series, his share of screen time is slightly inflated compared to his peers. Therefore, his abilities and moves are also more explored and detailed. For both sides, Shoto has a similar signature ability, only differing in the base element. Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall and Wall of Flames are two abilities that utilize ice and fire respectively, but their utility is comparable. These two abilities are able to cut the terrain in half and create distance between Shoto and his opponents.
Phosphor is one of his latest abilities, and it is slowly creeping up to the top of his arsenal. Phosphor combines both frost and flames to create a cold fire, burning opponents and freezing them still simultaneously. While this ability restricts Shoto’s stamina and endurance, it negates his body’s temperature regulation limitation and protects him against attacks imbued with fire or ice. Flashfire Fist is another one of his commonly-used abilities, though this move originally belonged to Endeavor. By concentrating his flames in his fist, Shoto unleashes a powerful punch laced with the firepower of his burning flames.
