In No Man's Sky, Multi-tool serves as a weapon and resource miner. On this page of our guide, we explain where to buy new versions of multi-tool and how to increase its inventory space. We also list the types, technology modules, and upgrades available to the multi-tool.
Waveform Focuser N56-P is the basic multi-tool at your disposal at the beginning of the game. It has 6 tech slots, while its maximum inventory slot capacity (same for all available modes) is 30 slots.
The basic task of a multi-tool is gathering resources, but the Mining Beam of it can also hurt animals, poisonous plants, and Sentinels. The player can have up to 6 multi-tools.
The individual multi-tools are distinguished by their score in the following categories:
class and type,
damage dealing potential,
range of the scanner,
class bonuses,
available tech slots.
You can upgrade the class of a multi-tool by spending nanites at a dedicated terminal on space stations.
New Multitool - where to buy?
New multitools are found:
at dedicated vendors on space stations and Space Anomaly station (each station offers different models),
in each settlement,
in derelict ships,
as a reward for correct answer for the monolith puzzle,
may be received from NPCs as a gift.
Additional slots in Multitool - how to obtain?
More slots for the multi-tool can be obtained in variety of ways:
bought at a dedicated Multi-tool upgrade terminal on space stations;
received for free by accessing terminals in manufacturing facilities;
received as a reward for a successful completion of some missions.
Multitool technology blueprints
The Multitool technology blueprints found below can be bought at Space Anomaly, found while exploring, or received as rewards for completed task. Each new module has to be installed in a free, corresponding slot, and required resources needed to build it have to be delivered.
Optical Drill - allows faster acquisition of elements, increasing the number of items collected while applying the laser. Cost - 460 nanites.
Scanner:
Waveform Recycler - increases the scan radius of the scanner. Cost - 120 nanites.
Survey Device - improves the capabilities of the Analysis Visor. Cost - 320 nanites.
Multi-tool - Combat Modules
All multitool combat modules i.e. of the Boltcaster, can be bought at Space Anomaly, found during exploration, or received as a reward for completed tasks. The module has to be then installed in a free, corresponding, slot and built by delivering the required resources. Different types of weapons may require a different element to charge.
Boltcaster offers 6 different combat functionalities:
Barrel Ioniser - increases weapon accuracy and allows longer firing without overheating. Cost - 90 nanites. Can be upgraded with:
Boltcaster Ricochet Module - costs 90 nanites.
Plasma Launcher - a weapon firing explosive grenades. Cost - 150 nanites. Can be upgraded with:
Geology Cannon - fires a grenade of a higher blast radius. Cost - 150 nanites.
Paralysis Mortar - costs 150 nanites.
Blaze Javelin - a chargeable Energy weapon - the higher the charge, the more powerful the projectile gets. Cost - 250 nanites. Can be upgraded with:
Impact Igniter - adds fire damage. Cost - 180 nanites.
Neutron Cannon - a weapon dealing area of effect damage. Cost - 250 nanites. Can be upgraded with:
P-Field Compressor This upgrade equips the weapon with additional high-velocity rounds. Cost - 180 nanites.
Multitool upgrade modules
The Multi-tool upgrade modules can be found at a dedicated vendor on space stations. Each station offer different modules and in different prices.
Upgrade modules can be installed in a free, corresponding, slot of the multi-tool, and doesn't require additional resources to build. It should be mentioned that upgrade module slots are limited and installing one may replace already installed modules.
Similar to the Exosuit and starship inventory, new slots can be purchased for units. The slots have no effect on the Multi-tool other than allowing more or less technology to be installed on it. The minimum number of Multi-Tool inventory slots is 9 and the maximum is 60.
Technology inventory is only for Exosuit technology upgrades. New players begin the game with 10 Technology slots. All other players may add additional slots to Technology inventory, for a total of 60.
One of the most straightforward methods to increase exosuit technology slots is by locating drop pods on planets or purchasing them at space stations. Each drop pod contains an exosuit upgrade that players can use to expand either their general inventory, cargo, or technology slots.
The base Exosuit has 24 Cargo Inventory Slots and 10 Technology Inventory Slots available. Additional slots can be unlocked by interacting with suit upgrade terminals in Drop Pods and Space Stations.
Occasionally players may acquire a Multi-Tool Expansion Slot. This can be used to add one slot to a selected multi-tool. Using this option will consume the Multi-Tool Expansion Slot module. The maximum number of slots available depends on the type and class of multi-tool (Alien, Experimental, Pistol, or Rifle).
Royal Multi-tools start off with good damage and scanner bonuses. They are a rare and expensive specialization, currently can only be obtained from Sentinel Pillars, and they can have between 11 and 14 slots, most of them are damaged.
Sentinel Multi-tools have a high damage bonus, a medium mining bonus, and a medium scanner bonus. They are a rare specialisation, can only be obtained from Harmonic Camps in dissonant systems for free, but with many slots damaged.
If you are looking for the S-class multitool, your best bet at finding them would be on “rich” planets. To be able to detect these planets, you will have to get at least an Economic Scanner. The blueprint for this item can be bought at a very cheap price from the Starship Merchant, who can be found at the Anomaly.
Installing them in general slots comes at the expense of inventory space. For example one can install three movement modules in general slots and three more movement modules in the technology slots and have their cumulative bonus.
The game displays a generic "unsuitable location" error message once the limit has been reached. There is also a limit of 16,000 base objects per save and a 3,000 components upload limit per base. Bases which use more than 3,000 parts cannot be uploaded.
Suits can be upgraded through crafting and through relays in Space Stations and Atlas Stations. There are a total of 48 slots in the exosuit inventory. You can purchase 35 upgrades throughout the game. The first upgrade costs 10,000 units and the last upgrade costs 350,000 units.
The maximum number of units that a player can accrue is 4,294,967,295 (approx 4.3 billion) (being FFFFFFFF in hexadecimal, thus being an overflow error) after which the number will not rise any further. It will NOT wrap around to zero.
Alien (organic looking) is the rarest, followed by Experimental (real clean sci fi look). The appearance is procedurally generated, so no one type appearance should be any more rare then another another of the same type (i.e. pistol, rifle, experimental, and alien). What's the max slots after PF now on multi tools?
The Blaze Javelin is considered the most powerful multi-tool weapon in the game, functioning as a sniper rifle that deals significant damage at long distances.
The four most useful items crafted with Storm Crystals are the Warp Hypercore, Environment Control Unit (ECU), Icarus Fuel System, and Antimatter Reactor. The number of Storm Crystals needed for each is listed below.
On your fleet management screen, you can unlock 4 Squadron slots for 800 / 3,500 / 7,500 / 10,000 Nanites. From this menu you can check out the stats of each ship & their captain & dismiss them if needed. Once those slots have been unlocked, you can approach most ship captains & ask for their services.
Your suit inventory space is increased in just two ways: buying an upgrade, or finding one. Buying upgrades is by far the easier option, at least at first. To purchase an upgrade, head to the a Space Station and go to the vendor closest to the appearance customiser (on the left hand side as you fly into the station).
If you are looking for the S-class multitool, your best bet at finding them would be on “rich” planets. To be able to detect these planets, you will have to get at least an Economic Scanner.
